Construction crews are bridging the gap, working on the brand new boardwalk at Dickerson Park Zoo.

"We will get the walkway coming through, and it will come all the way through, and all the way around to a pavilion, and you will cross the bridge.

Some of the construction guys remember going across the old bridge.

"Oh my god, I loved running here," McCartney stated. "It was fun when we were kids."

The old walkway is now long gone. It closed more than two years ago because of some structural concerns. Part of the wood gave way underneath some walkers. Nobody fell in and no one was hurt. But, no more chances could be taken; the pathway was closed to the public.

The new one is coming together. A big milestone in the construction came Wednesday with the arrival and setting of a new metal span for the middle section.

"They just hoisted it up with a crane and swung it around and plopped it down," said Powell.

For the construction crews, this project has a little different than most.

"You are working around peacocks and so they have been part of the crew," Powell laughed.

"...it has been kind of fun for me," McCartney said.

The new spans are much wider that the old ones. The zoo says that will make it easier for people to get through, especially those with strollers and wheelchairs.

Powell explained, "We just cant wait to have everybody out here and walk across the new bridge."

Since this walkway has been closed- there are some exhibits guests haven't been able to get to...the animals put elsewhere.

Soon- this side of Dickerson Park will be back.

"Just the whole zoo experience- it just opens it back up," Powell stated.

"I can't wait to come through when it is done, too," McCartney exclaimed "I believe they will like it."

The zoo hopes to have the new boardwalk done and open by the beginning of the new year.
