WEST PLAINS, Mo. -- A nurse working for a West Plains skilled nursing home faces criminal charges for allegedly having sex with a patient under his care.

Steven James Stroman, 45, made his initial appearance Friday morning in Howell County Court where he faces two misdemeanors.

According to charging documents, a patient at West Vue Nursing and Rehabilitation Center reported the sexual contact to police Monday. Stroman has worked as a weekend overnight LPN Charge Nurse at West Vue for about a year.

The victim said Stroman had sex with her twice between late August and early September. She told West Plains police investigators the first encounter was consensual. Another nurse explained to officers the victim "was getting scared" after Stroman had sex with her a second time on Sept. 7.

The victim, 68, said Stroman gave her pain pills each time he had sex with her.

Police interviewed Stroman on Tuesday. He initially denied having sex with the victim and claimed to always bring another nurse into the room if he needs to remove a patient's clothing.

Upon further questioning, Stroman said the patient touched him inappropriately before eventually admitting to police he did have sex with the patient.

Stroman faces a combined two years in jail and up to $4,000 in fines if convicted on the misdemeanor counts. Online court records show Stroman does not have a criminal history in the state of Missouri.

State Board of Nursing files show Stroman had a valid, "unencumbered" LPN license with an expiration date of May 31, 2020.
