World War II veteran honored at Harrison Lions Club meeting

HARRISON, Ark. - Haywood McCaleb Jr., a World War II veteran, turns 96-years-old on Saturday, and members of the Harrison Lions Club sang happy birthday to him.

Boone County Judge Robert Hathaway also made a special proclamation that June 15, the veteran's birthday, will be Haywood McCaleb Jr. Day in the county.

McCaleb Junior was in the army, in the infantry and an anti-tank platoon.

He earned a Bronze Star. It’s awarded to Soldiers for their heroic achievements.

“I was in four campaigns in the Pacific and the Philippines and three of them were beach landings. So they thought that was enough to justify a Bronze Star," McCaleb Jr. said.

The veteran said he didn't expect this kind of attention when he went to the meeting, but he is very appreciative to the Lions Club.
