A fire at an electric substation caused power outages in most or all of the town at midday Tuesday.

The substation is behind the police station, which had to be evacuated, according to the Cedar County Sheriff's Department in Stockton. Firefighters from Stockton, Nevada and Walker helped El Dorado Springs firefighters contain and put out the fire, which was raging at 1:30. An employee of a nearby business said at 2:40 that it appeared to be under control. The fire was out and power was restored to all customers by 4:30.

City Manager Bruce Rogers said the cause of the fire is undetermined. He didn't know how much repairs would cost.

School administrators dismissed classes early because of the power outage.
