The Polk County Sheriff's Department is looking for the person -- or persons -- who dumped about 2,000 pounds of trash at the North Dry Sac River Access near the Polk-Greene County line.

Missouri Department of Transportation crews picked up the stinky, soggy mess on Tuesday morning after the dumping was discovered on Monday afternoon. Workers believe it was a dump truck load.

Polk County Sheriff's Department investigators say they have a few names from the pile of household trash, and suspect it may have been from someone cleaning out a rental property.

Taxpayers cover the bill for MoDOT to clean up the trash and take it to the landfill less than five miles away. Investigators say the person responsible could face a misdemeanor charge and up to a $2,000 fine, or a $10,000 fine if a corporation is found responsible.

MoDOT took and shared these photos of the trash.
