Vehicle kills pedestrian on West Kearney Street
A vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian from Springfield late Tuesday morning. An ambulance took Michelle McCown, 43, to a hospital but doctors could not save her.
Police diverted traffic away from the 2500 block of West Kearney Street so they could investigate and reconstruct the accident. They said the driver, a man from Willard, stayed at the scene and was cooperative. Officers said there is no indication that the driver was impaired.
The accident was in the eastbound lanes west of Race Brothers Farm and Home Supply about 11 a.m. Police said two women were walking north across the street and the eastbound vehicle was in the inside lane. McCown tried to run across the lane but was hit.
Lisa Cox, a spokeswoman for the Springfield Police Department, says this is the fourth fatal vehicle-pedestrian crash in the city this year. The previous three were:
-- Petra Hensler died on Feb. 1, four days after being hit by a vehicle about 7 p.m. while crossing North Glenstone Avenue near Kearney Street;
-- Marilee Sarver died on Feb. 9 after being hit about 6:35 p.m. while crossing South Glenstone just north of Cherokee Street; and
-- John Choate died on Feb. 10 after being crushed between a piece of equipment and a trailer attached to a backing semi truck at the Springfield Landfill off Missouri 13 north of Springfield.
