NIXA, Mo. (KY3) — The Missouri commissioner of education was at Nixa Public Schools on Monday to launch the district’s registered youth apprenticeship program.

Students signed up for or committed to continuing their apprenticeship. The program allows students to participate in both school-based and work-based learning.

It gives students the chance to remain in school while also getting their foot in the door of nearby businesses and to see what a potential career looks like ahead of time.

”I am able to get paid to do something that is heightening what I think I am going to do as a career path. And then I think that the certificate is just something that adds the cherry on top. I think it’s a great experience for students to diversify themselves and just really get a feel for what life in their career looks like,” said Nixa student Maxx Pyle.

Nixa Schools says while this isn’t a replacement for a college education, it is an advantage to get real-world experience, and students get certificates to prove it as they pursue their field of study.

The program currently has 11 students, but any student 16 and over is welcome to apply.
