Woman charged in shooting death inside Springfield apartment
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) -Court documents reveal details in the shooting death inside a Springfield apartment complex on Wednesday night.
According to Springfield Police, at around 11:20 p.m., officers responded to the 505 apartment complex on East St. Louis for a shots-fired call on the 4th floor. Upon arrival, officers located Candise Hoskins, 28, outside the apartment building with a gunshot wound to her left leg.
Police said they discovered the victim, later identified as 21-year-old Xavier Scott, dead in a fourth-floor hallway. The victim had multiple apparent gunshot wounds, including at least one to his face.
A woman, named Victim 2 in court documents, was at her apartment with Scott when she was contacted by her ex-girlfriend, identified as Hoskins, who had previously lived at the complex with Victim 2.
Hoskins had a piece of mail and a blanket at the apartment she wanted returned to her. Victim 2 agreed to meet Hoskins outside the complex to give her the items. Victim 2 explained she believed Hoskins would cause a disturbance at the complex, especially if she was seen with Scott. Scott wanted to accompany Victim 2 as she met Hoskins based on past domestic issues between the two, according to documents.
As Victim 2 and Scott exited their apartment, they saw Hoskins walking towards them. Police state that Hoskins would have had to have been let in the front doors and the elevator to get to this point in the complex because both points are controlled by access cards.
Hoskins accepted the items from Victim 2, but then Hoskins became upset, and an altercation ensued. At some point during the altercation, Hoskins pulled out a handgun and continued arguing and pushing Victim 2, police stated. Hoskins was also able to grab both Victim 2’s and Scott’s phones during this time. Surveillance video captured Scott raising his hands as a sign of surrender at this point, documents state.
Victim 2 walked towards the elevator to go to the lobby to have someone call 911. While she was in the elevator, she heard shots being fired, according to documents.
Before the shots were fired, police state Hoskins walked away from Scott. However, Scott followed Hoskins, and he soon struck Hoskins on the right side of her head. Hoskins fell to the ground with Scott standing over her. Scott eventually was on top of Hoskins, and they wrestled. Soon after, Scott’s body went limp, and Hoskins struggled to get out from underneath him.
Hoskins was able to free herself, and she walked away toward the elevators. Scott remained motionless on the ground, police state.
Police state video surveillance was obtained, showing Hoskins being assisted by Victim 2 once outside the complex. Victim 2 retrieved a firearm that had fallen out of Hoskins’s pockets and discarded it in a nearby storm drain.
Another surveillance camera showed Hoskins collapse against a railing before being joined by Victim 2 and a male witness. Hoskins eventually rolled over, and another gun and a phone are seen lying underneath her. Footage shows Victim 2 retrieve that phone from under Hoskins, but she left the other gun on the ground. Immediately after, the male witness grabs the gun off the ground and runs away with it, according to police.
Both firearms were later recovered by detectives. The second gun, a Glock .45-caliber pistol, was found in a nearby bush. This gun was later found to be reported stolen, police state.
During an interview with the Springfield Police, Hoskins admitted to shooting Scott. Hoskins said she asked a resident for entry into the apartment complex. Hoskins also said she only remembered being shot and then responding to being shot by shooting Scott. She stated she had been drinking and smoking marijuana before this incident. Hoskins also claimed she did not recall how she came to have Scott’s firearm either.
Hoskins is in the Greene County Jail and charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and two counts of robbery.
