Woman charged after nearly 100 animals, some dead, removed from home in abuse case
LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WIS/Gray News) - A South Carolina woman is facing charges in an animal abuse case that involves nearly 100 animals.
According to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, 29-year-old Julia Evans Pickett was arrested Dec. 31, 2025. She has been charged with two felony counts of ill-treatment of animals.
Brittany Jones, the director of Lexington County Animal Services, said that Pickett’s arrest comes after the team got a tip about potential animal abuse concerns at two properties reportedly owned by the woman.
Animal services received a search warrant and said they searched the properties in question. Jones noted that crews found the conditions to be severe enough that all animals found had to be removed.
“Approximately 100 animals were located and removed. Some animals had, unfortunately, already died,” Jones said. “More animals might not survive, or might have to be humanely euthanized despite ongoing care efforts.”
All surviving animals were taken to various facilities and are receiving care.
According to Jones, more charges are expected against Pickett.
The 29-year-old was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center.
