Ozark Empire Fair lifts on-site consumption rule, allows drinks throughout fairgrounds
Fair leaders say change is about convenience; policy will be reviewed after event
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - For the first time, visitors to the Ozark Empire Fair can purchase an alcoholic drink and carry it with them around the fairgrounds.
Fair leaders say the change is about convenience, not a new source of revenue.
New locations, new options
Margaritas are a new addition at Jalapeños Mexican Food this year. The stand is one of about six locations now selling alcohol at the fair, up from about four under the previous policy.
Kent Hyde, Ozark Empire Fair board president, said the prior rule required customers to drink where they purchased.
“You had to consume it where you purchased it. So we changed that so people can buy a drink; they can walk around with it if they want to. And the reason we did that is about every other fair of any size in the country does that,” Hyde said.
Customer response
Fair cook Michael Gavisk said customers have quickly embraced the new option, especially during the summer heat.
“Well, it doesn’t seem like they’re surprised. They’re very happy that they can walk around. They’re loving, especially in the heat, frozen drinks and everything,” Gavisk said.
Fair attendee Cassandra Ortega said the change adds convenience for families.
“Oh, wow. Yeah, that’s actually a lot more convenient. It makes it easier to enjoy our time while we’re enjoying our time with our families,” she said.
Identification and enforcement
Fair leaders said every customer must show identification. Gavisk said workers can also radio other bars with the description of a person they cut off who appears intoxicated.
Hyde said the fair is monitoring for disruptive behavior.
“We have had a few occasions, not many, when someone would become disorderly under the policy in place, and they are immediately removed from the property,” Hyde said.
Fair leaders said they will review visitor feedback and any security problems after the fair. Hyde said they would reconsider the policy if it begins hurting the family atmosphere.
