ESPN analyst, Joplin native Matt Miller charged in car crash that left him with amputated arm
Missouri AG continues to investigate alleged financial fraud
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - ESPN analyst and Joplin native Matt Miller has been charged in the Jasper County car crash that left him with an amputated arm.
This comes as he continues to be investigated by the Missouri Attorney General for alleged financial fraud.
The crash happened on Wednesday, June 16, at 3:50 p.m. on Missouri Route 96, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol accident report.
Miller was medflighted to the hospital with serious injuries, which included having to have his left arm amputated.
Miller is now charged with a misdemeanor, failing to drive on the right half of the roadway. The crash report states his Ford Bronco collided with a semi going the other way. The semi driver was not injured.
After news of the crash, complaints started mounting on Reddit and social media from sports fans saying they didn’t receive winnings from fantasy football leagues run by Miller that were supposed to benefit charities, or camps and scouting lessons they had paid him for.
In early July, Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway announced she was investigating after receiving 26 complaints. Hanaway sat down with us for her first interview about this investigation.
“Very specifically, that we were getting complaints from Missourians that they had been victims of his. And it does look like it’s going to be a lengthy investigation because there were a lot of transactions. There’s certainly a lot of smoke, and I would bet there’s some fire in this case,” Hanaway said.
First Alert 4 asked the Attorney General’s office if it had received any more complaints since then. A spokesperson responded, “No additional updates at this time.”
A GoFundMe account started by a Miller family member, which raised $51,000 for his medical expenses, was paused when complaints swelled.
First Alert 4 asked GoFundMe who paused it? A spokesperson responded, “Confirming the organizer turned off the donations.”
The Attorney General said the GoFundMe account is not part of the investigation.
Since the complaints started to garner scrutiny, some sports fans say they’ve started receiving money they were owed.
One fan on X shared with First Alert 4 that Miller paid him $500 in fantasy winnings on June 30, saying, “He paid me after numerous attempts reaching out.”
Host of the Last Men Standing podcast Tony Farmer, who has been covering the case, posted on X that two other fans have confirmed they have also recently been paid back-owed money.
First Alert 4 has reached out to Miller and a family member for comment. We have not heard back yet.
Miller’s court date for the crash is September 21 in Jasper County.
