Senior Resource Seminar in Springfield ensures no one questions where they will get help

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - There is a free event today where seniors can learn all about the community resources available to them.

The Senior Resource Network of the Ozarks was founded because a woman was looking for resources for her own family and realized she had no idea where to start.

Wednesday’s Senior Resource Seminar at the Gillioz Theatre helps with that exact issue for any senior, family member, or caregiver who needs it.

“Sometimes the biggest hurdle is just knowing where to start,” said Samantha Shrum with the Senior Resource Network of the Ozarks. “It feels like due diligence with these resources with the audience that we have and the connection we have to be able to give back to this audience and take that weight off their shoulders. They’re able to just have somewhere to start. They may not need these resources right now, but when they do, they have a starting point and people that they can contact who care about them and want to help them.”

Unlike a normal resource fair, this one doesn’t include any moving about. Around 10 community organizations will be presenting what they have to offer to people in the audience.

“This is very much a come in, sit down just like you’re attending the movie,” Shrum said, “and we will do the speaking from the stage, so there isn’t a lot of moving about like there would be at a traditional resource fair, so it’s very mobility-friendly to just come in and hear what we have to share.”

Some of the topics include senior living, financial planning, estate planning, Medicare and insurance help, and other health and wellness services.

After the event, people 60 or older can see a free screening of “Tommy Boy,” including some trivia.

“We have a very strong senior audience already at the Gillioz Movie Matinees,” said Shrum, “and so we figured it made great sense to use the platform we have with the Senior Resource Network of the Ozarks to share with the movie audience the resources that are available to them in the community.”

The event starts at noon at the Gillioz Theatre on August 19. It’ll last about an hour, including time for one-on-one conversations.
