SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - For this week’s episode of Springfield Changemakers, Geoff and Joy Steele were nominated by the community for everything they’ve done as executive and associate directors for the Gillioz Theatre in downtown Springfield.

On Oct. 11, 1926, the Gillioz Theatre opened its doors for the first time in downtown Springfield, merely months after Route 66 opened.

Since joining the theatre’s team in 2014, Geoff and Joy said they have tried to get more people to support the arts by diversifying what they offer to the community.

The theater now operates roughly 200 days a year and is home to the opera, the Missouri Jazz Orchestra, and Mahjong on Mondays. The theatre also offers a midweek movie matinee that is free for anyone 60 or older, and a Cinema Sunday series for families.
