SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) — As crowds gathered for Springfield’s Veterans Day parade, local advocates called attention to a challenge some veterans face after their service.

Michael Bohlen, a support specialist with the Ozarks Alliance to End Homelessness, said veteran homelessness has decreased in the area, with 27 veterans reported as homeless. But he cautioned that the numbers may not capture everyone without stable housing.

Bohlen said the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted progress toward ending homelessness and created additional instability for people already struggling to afford a place to live.

“There are folks who, while they may still have housing, they’re one paycheck away, and suddenly they can find themselves in a hotel room,” Bohlen said.

He worries the problem could grow as housing costs rise faster than incomes.

“I think this is a situation that’s just going to get worse and worse,” Bohlen said. “That as people’s incomes don’t keep up with the cost of living, it’s just there’s going to be a lot more people who wind up on the streets.”

Bohlen said a shortage of affordable housing remains a major obstacle to reducing homelessness in southwest Missouri. He estimated Springfield has a deficit of more than 8,000 affordable homes.

“If you have a senior on a fixed income and rent increases continue to climb, but income doesn’t keep up, something has to give,” he said.

Army veteran Michael McFarland proudly wore his uniform at the parade, decades after serving in the 1960s. But he says that same sense of pride can make it difficult for veterans to ask for help when they need it.

“Somebody wants to help you. So please, reach out,” McFarland said. “You might have to take the first step to reach out to a post, American Legion post. There’s some in Springfield. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be hesitant.”
