SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - The Peterson family’s life took an unexpected turn when their youngest son, Luke, faced a rare and challenging health condition.

Born full of energy and joy, Luke’s journey towards recovery showcases the power of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

The Petersons initially noticed symptoms in Luke at the age of 4 months. Alarmed by the onset of puberty-related signs such as body odor, they relentlessly advocated for their son, sensing that something was amiss.

At 18 months, Luke was referred to an endocrinologist. After an MRI and bloodwork, he received the diagnosis on November 30th, 2022. He had a hypothalamic hamartoma.

This rare brain tumor not only explained the puberty symptoms but also led to gelastic seizures, plaguing Luke with 10 to 15 seizures a day.

Determined to provide their son with the best chance at a normal life, the family took a daring leap – Luke underwent intricate brain surgery on July 21st, 2023, at Texas Children’s Hospital.

The laser ablation brain surgery was the least invasive option to help get rid of the seizures.

The financial burden of medical expenses loomed large over the Petersons until Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals stepped in as a beacon of hope. Covering the remaining costs from November to December, the network alleviated the family’s financial strain, allowing them to solely focus on Luke’s recovery.

“He is doing really well, Luke’s dad Corey Peterson says. “He has occasional seizures still.”

The family and doctors believe this will eventually subside as he gets further from surgery.

Now, with the weight lifted from their shoulders, the family can concentrate on letting Luke be a carefree 3-year-old. He will go back in July to be evaluated again to determine the next steps for his treatment.
