Miracle Child: Meet Children’s Miracle Network Hospital child Zach Vollintine
The resilient teen defies odds and finds expression through painting
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - In the world of art, Zach Vollintine is a unique creator. His canvases tell stories without the need for brushes.
Instead, drops of paint on paper, guided by the sways of his hand, bring his imagination to life. Artistry runs in the family—his sister is a painter, and his mom, Heather Vollintine, is a photographer.
Despite being in his blood, his mom humbly admits, “His art is more creative,” acknowledging Zach’s unique talents that surpass her own.
The remarkable aspect of Zach’s artistic journey lies in the fact that holding a paintbrush is challenging for him. His artistic flair, however, is not hindered by his physical condition.
“Zach has arthrogryposis, scoliosis. He has clubbed hands and clubbed feet,” Heather says.
When Zach was born, doctors delivered a sobering prognosis to his mom.
“They told us when he was born that he had a 50/50 chance of living and that he was brain dead,” Heather says.
Contrary to these predictions, Zach surpassed expectations, displaying a stronger vocabulary than expected and a fighting spirit that inspires those around him.
At the age of 13, Zach has undergone 14 surgeries, numerous appointments, and countless hospital stays. Throughout this journey, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN) has been a crucial support system for the Vollintine family.
“We would not be where we are. It takes off a lot of stress because you don’t have to worry about, ‘Okay, I have to get the bills paid, and I have to get gas, which adds up,’” Heather says,
From gas and travel expenses to meal vouchers, CMN Hospitals has lightened the load for the Vollintine family, who bear the weight of various medical concerns, some unknown to many.
For the rest of Zach’s life, he will require additional assistance, and his mom is more than willing to provide it. CMN Hospitals continues to stand by their side, making the journey a little bit easier for the family. Zach’s smile and talents make every struggle worth the effort.
