Miracle Child: Meet Children’s Miracle Network Hospital child Zachary Sawyer

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Vina Bautista and Matthew Sawyer found themselves on a journey they never anticipated, with their son Zachary Paul Sawyer. The kid has continued to beat all the odds.

Zachary’s entrance into the world was marked by surprise and premature arrival. Born in May, 14 weeks before his August due date, Zachary weighed only one pound and 13 ounces, making his early days a true test of strength.

The challenges escalated as Zachary battled not only the premature birth but also Klebsiella pneumonia during his initial days.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cox South became his first home for the first 24 days of life. A diagnosis of sepsis prompted a transfer to St. Louis Children’s Hospital for specialized care.

“It’s not what we expected was going to happen. So it’s hard. It breaks my heart,” shared Vina.

Zachary’s fight for survival demanded an all-hands-on-deck approach.

The first casualties were routine responsibilities, including work, as the family focused entirely on Zachary’s well-being. It was at this critical juncture that Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals stepped in, providing not just financial assistance but also crucial emotional support.

“They supported us not only financially, but Children’s Miracle Network supported us emotionally too,” said Matthew.

The financial burden on the family was lightened, with the network covering essential expenses such as gas for frequent trips between Branson and St. Louis for medical appointments. Beyond the financial aid, the emotional support provided a lifeline during moments of uncertainty.

While Zachary’s journey to recovery is ongoing, today, there are certainly rays of hope. He is gaining weight and being weaned off respiratory support. The family expresses eternal gratitude to those who rallied to their side during their darkest hours.

“It’s a miracle,” Vina concluded, acknowledging the incredible support that transformed Zachary’s story into one of hope, strength, and the indomitable power of community through the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
