On Your Side: Seven ways to save at the grocery store
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) — We told you earlier this month that your grocery bill is projected to spike three percent, but not if On Your Side can help.
Blame it on inflation and tariff talks. Prices could go up on seafood, coffee, bananas, cheese, nuts, and candy bars, just to name a few.
You know to make a list and stick to it, but try making a list based on already marked-down items. It’s a win-win. You’ll be bargain hunting while meal prepping. Get creative with a cheap swap-out.
And while it may not be preferred, sometimes you can go without. There are so many substitutes for eggs.
Buy in bulk. You’ll save hundreds of dollars yearly on milk, rice, beans, and other staples at wholesale stores.
Cut back on paper towels and paper plates.
Frozen fruits and veggies are sometimes cheaper, and they’ll last longer.
Store brands are sometimes a steal compared to popular name brands, and the ingredients are usually the same.
Use coupons and shop with an app. AnyList has recipes and a meal prep calendar, which online retailers like Walmart and Instacart can fill.
Join a store’s loyalty program. It’s usually free, so saving there requires no effort.
Try to stop or cut back on buying pre-made meals. It’s cheaper to make it yourself. Chop up your veggies. Shred your cheese.
When you make a big meal, freeze some of it. That eliminates food waste and comes in handy on a busy week.
