SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Eight months after speed humps were installed on several streets near U.S. 65 in Springfield, residents say the traffic-calming measures have changed some driver behavior but have not eliminated speeding in the area.

The city installed the speed humps on East Bennett Street, Linwood Street, and John and Gelvin Avenues in December as part of a pilot program after concerns were raised about drivers going too fast.

Residents notice changes

Mel Heisler, who lives near the speed humps, said before the humps were installed, drivers showed “no regard for people walking their dogs or families walking through here all the time.”

“And yeah, it was a good idea to put speed bumps in,” Heisler said.

Heisler said she has noticed some changes since the humps went in.

“Yeah, I’d say that there’s less racing on these streets. Not that there was a ton before, but you could definitely hear the engines revving up. So that’s definitely put kind of a stop to that, which is nice,” Heisler said.

She said the speed humps have not stopped everyone. She still sees motorcycles and some cars speeding between the humps or trying to avoid them altogether.

Not everyone saw speeding as a problem

Landon Gomez, who also lives near the speed humps, said he did not think speeding was a major problem to begin with but has noticed drivers slowing down.

“I’d say so. It’s pretty common to have drivers who live in this neighborhood, so they’re already aware of the speed bumps. But for the new people, I would say they have been slowing down,” Gomez said.

The city originally said it would collect traffic data after the speed humps were installed to determine their effectiveness. When asked for an update, or whether there were plans to install more speed humps in other neighborhoods, the city said no one was available for an interview.
