Springfield City Utilities marks 20 years of Smart Solutions with new rebate

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Edited News Release/KY3) - City Utilities of Springfield is celebrating 20 years of its Smart Solutions program, which has helped thousands of customers make their homes and businesses more energy-efficient.

Since its launch, Smart Solutions has returned more than $17.7 million to customers through more than 90,000 rebates, according to City Utilities.

City Utilities now offers a new rebate for ENERGY STAR-rated water heaters. Residential electric and natural gas customers are eligible for a rebate of up to $300 for the purchase and installation of an ENERGY STAR natural gas or heat pump water heater. Rebate programs

Over the past two decades, City Utilities has offered rebate programs designed to make energy-efficient upgrades more accessible for homes and businesses. The programs are designed to help customers reduce utility bills through energy and water savings.

Current residential Smart Solutions offerings include:

  • Heating and cooling equipment
  • Electric vehicle charger and outlet upgrade
  • Insulation upgrades
  • Smart thermostat
  • Toilet rebate

Commercial rebates and programs include:

  • Commercial lighting
  • Smart thermostat
  • Toilet rebate
  • Commercial energy audit
  • Commercial lighting audit

Peak Rewards and education

Smart Solutions also includes programs such as Peak Rewards, launched in 2025. By enrolling a smart thermostat, customers can help ease strain on the energy grid during peak times, such as when temperatures are very hot or cold. City Utilities makes temporary temperature adjustments of 2 to 3 degrees for up to four hours, and customers can opt out.

City Utilities said its experts have delivered more than 600 presentations to more than 53,000 community members as part of the program’s education efforts.
