SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - The American Veterinary Medical Association is urging pet owners to take precautions during the winter storm.

Pet owners should keep cats and dogs indoors. Their fur does not protect them from frostbite or hypothermia.

The association advises pet owners to know their pet’s cold tolerance and shorten walks for all dogs in extreme cold, especially those with short hair or underlying health conditions. Veterinarians recommend checking pets’ paws frequently for injury or ice.

Pet owners should recognize signs of hypothermia, such as shivering or weakness. The association advises consulting a veterinarian immediately if pet owners suspect their animal has frostbite or hypothermia.
